In the Closet

Organizing the closet comes next on my shit list right after washing the dishes. I cleaned out my closet last week and since half of my clothes were on the floor of the closet it legit took me two full days. Anyways, that’s about it, no huge story here, except for the fact that my life has become much easier since I’ve become borderline-OCD organized with the closet. Everything is color-coded and easy to find with zero clutter, it’s great! I’m hoping this lasts more than a week or two this time. I just wanted to provide you guys with some tips that I found helpful to make things easier for you next time you decide to organize yours.

  1. Pump-up the music loud and have a few cold beers on hand.
  2. How you organize your closet is really a matter of preference…but may I make a suggestion: Color-coding your closet by tops/dresses and then by bottoms is a great way to go. If you add the dresses as a 3rd category it looks more cluttered…not as streamlined. So for example, I do mine in this color order: white, cream, ROYGBIV, brown, gray, black. For each color, I do tanks, followed by short sleeves, then long sleeves, then dresses.
  3. Invest the money to go out and buy all of the same type of hangers. It really makes a HUGE difference. I opt for this type huggable hangers from Target. Look how nice using one type of hanger looks:Uniform Hangers
  4. While you’re swapping out all the hangers in your closet, color code them at the same time, while throwing out anything you haven’t worn in the past 6 months – a year. Also take out any seasonal items and store in a flat plastic bin under the bed. Tip: anytime you wear anything, turn the hanger around so that it’s facing the opposite way. That way, in 6 months you’ll easily be able to tell what you have and haven’t worn.
  5. Get everything off the floor of your closet except for boots. I prefer to store my shoes in hanging shoe shelves. (God, this is really starting to seem like a Target-sponsored post but I swear it’s not!) Store away any seasonal shoes.
  6. I stand boots on the floor of my closet resting on inexpensive thin doormats to protect the floor of my closet from dirt and wetness. That way when I walk in the door, I can take my boots off and quickly transfer them to the closet. Here’s a cool tip: Get boots to stand up straight and on their own by rolling up magazines and placing them inside!
  7. Color code purses on top shelf (or shelves) of closet. Use shelf dividers if necessary.
  8. How to store your hats: I’ve hung hooks on my closet walls so I can easily hang them without worrying about them getting all bent and such.
  9. In regards to storing other accessories, I hang my belts using a tie/belt hanger, and I hang my scarvesĀ (color-coded of course) using these 4-bar hangers.
  10. GOOD LUCK. You’ll need it.

Make sure not to leave beautiful items like Christmas Sweaters in piles around the room. That step will prevent a dog, (such as a cute french bully) from mistaking the mounds of clothes for wee-wee pads and allow the tradition of the Christmas Sweater to live on for years.

Yes, that is a GREAT tip Jane. That would be really embarrassing if someone actually had the audacity to leave their clothes on the floor of the closet with the closet door open only to come home and find that the dog had been sleeping in there on the clothes all day and wee-weeing on them. I, however, do not know anyone that has happened to. Luckily. Cough. Cough.
