I love April Fools’ Day. I enjoy having pranks played on me and of course, playing them on others. Just a tidbit of Fools’ Day history for you guys: It is speculated that April Fools’ started in France in the middle 1500s. At the time, the European calendar began each new year on April 1st. In 1564, King Charles IX adopted a new calendar that changed the new year date to January 1st. There were, of course, the people who refused to accept this as the new New Year’s Day, and as a result they became the butt of jokes and tricks by everyone else.
While the rest of us were changing our Facebook relationship statuses and claiming to be engaged or pregnant, these food establishments and sites were busy tricking us with too good to be true, delicious claims.
- Chow’s Fake-tastic Content – Chow.com fooled us with a few outrageous stories, such as Guy Fiery Wins Peabody, Stay-at-Home Mom Arrested for Using Bouillon Cube, and Social Conservatives Target Extreme Ice-Cream Flavors.
- In-N-Out Coming to New York – Sorry New York, this one is a fake too. CollegeHumor began posting signs around New York yesterday claiming that the amazingly delicious cult chain of the west was coming soon. If I lived in New York I probably would have been super distraught over this scam. But I live in L.A., thus, have copious amounts of In-N-Out to my disposal. In fact, after I’m done writing this I’m going to go.
- Starbucks to Offer Two New Sizes - Ok, I admit, I actually believed this one. I heard it on NPR I think and I didn’t even flinch that it might be fake. Starbucks announced yesterday that they would be offering two new beverage sizes to their menu: the “Plenta” and the “Micra”. Now that I see the photos it looks absolutely ridiculous. I literally laughed out loud at the Plenta, but nonetheless, I’m sure coffee lovers throughout the nation are disappointed.
- The Food Network is Taking Over Food Network Humor – Food Network Humor announced yesterday that Scripps Networks will be taking over their blog. Changes include: 1) Guy Fieri’s hair, clothes, and penis are now off limits. 2) VIVA paper towels must be referenced daily. 3) Traveling to the Hamptons every other weekend to iron Ina Garten’s denim shirts is necessary. 4) Must make at least 20 spelling errors per week so that Guy Fieri’s fans may better be able to relate to the blog.
- Slice Going Neapolitan – Serious Eats’ Slice announced yesterday that they will be sponsored by the Naples Tourism Bureau for the next six months, and thus will only focus on Neapolitan pizza. Also, all posts moving forward will be written in Italian. If you like pizza so much, learn the language. Posers.
